WINNIPEG (CBC) - Two Canadians are being charged with misdemeanours in California for replacing a U.S. flag with a Canadian one after Canada won the Olympic hockey gold at the Vancouver Games in February.
Police in La Quinta, about 200 kilometres east of Los Angeles, allege the men took down a U.S. flag erected on a mountaintop and replaced it with a Canadian flag following Team Canadas victory over the U.S.
The Stars and Stripes were being maintained by a resident of nearby Indian Wells in honour of those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. The flag was found damaged.
Ryan Smith, 25, and Matt Siefert, 26, have been charged with misdemeanour vandalism and misdemeanour desecration of a flag, the Riverside County district attorneys office said Friday. Both men are reportedly California residents.
They face up to a year in jail if convicted.
This is really worth the time and effort of the police? Really? Ok, it was in bad taste, but worthy of investigation, prosecution and incarceration? Nobody would have batted an eyelash if it had been two Americans who did it because they have that right! It's part of the freaking American Constitution!!! But I guess as Canadians, these men are held to a different standard, not given the same rights and liberties.
I mean sure, I would be pissed off if two Americans did the same thing if the situation were reversed, but would I want them charged and thrown in jail? No! Come on! Get real! It's a bloody flag. But I guess that's the difference between Canadians and Americans. We're a little more tolerant.
