So, over Christmas I was vilely ill. The doctors think gallbladder, but can't find anything now. At any rate, previous to that, I was having a lot of trouble with my guts. I say guts, because it was everything in my abdomen, from my stomach to my colon. I was having pain, nausea, vomitting, diarrhea. It was bad. Really bad. But it was also day-to-day normal for me. Then I got the gallbladder attack. Sucked so bad because it literally fell over Christmas. But in a way, it was the best thing that happened to me.
I am a self-confessed pop junkie. I LOVE pop. I drank Coke Zero because it was the closest flavour to Coke without the calories. It's also full of aspartame and acesulfame-potassium. I could easily drink 1 to 1.5 L of the stuff a day. It's also full of caffeine. Which is one of the reasons why I drink the stuff - caffeine helps in the prevention of the onset of Parkinsons, which runs in my family. I hate coffee so I drink Coke Zero.
So there I was over Christmas, so sick, and of course, jonesing for my caffeine fix. I would try drinking the Coke Zero and it seemed to exacerbate all my symptoms. Finally, really needing my caffeine fix, I drank some regular Coke. I stayed with the Coke for a couple of weeks and had a HUGE epiphany! My guts were feeling better!
Just removing the artificial sweeteners seemed to have helped all those "normal" gastric problems I was having! Now, the downside to that is the extra calories in the regular Coke. Which totally sucks. THEN comes the news a couple of weeks ago that pop consumption greater than two/week is linked to the developement of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer - one of my knee-jerk, irrational fears. But did that stop me from drinking pop? No!
I love Coke. Plus, it's my caffeine source. What to do?
So, this past weekend was the start of Operation No Coke. I am doing pretty well. In the past three days, I have had ONE, count it!, ONE Coke. That is amazing considering I was drinking anywhere between 3-5/day!!!
I'll tell you my secret: Wake-ups Tabs!
Remember, one of my reasons for drinking Coke, other than my love and my addiction, was the caffeine. SO, to make the transition, to still consume the caffeine I wanted, I figured I would have to use a supplement. I am taking 50mg at breakfast (that's the equivalent to 2 cups of Coke) and 25mg at lunch. And it's working! I had a Coke at lunch on Saturday (my first day) when Sarah and I went to lunch at Eastside's and that's been it for the Coke!
I don't miss the sugar! Can you believe that?
Now, don't get me wrong, I will still drink Coke. But it will be 'special' occassions, like going out to dinner or going to the movies, just not as my morning "coffee" with breakfast.
