Air Conditioner Update II

Ok, so .. the plan is to ask my neighbour who lives in the house behind ours (despite what Princess says, I do not have a squatter in my backyard) to teach me basic air conditioner maintenance ... I've done a little reading and I can see two problems already that need to be addressed ... and that's just what I can see on the outside.

I also want to thank everyone who gave me suggestions and info ... I am definitely going to try them all ...

It's a good air conditioner .. it's just having to work twice as hard to get the same results ... so obviously a little maintenance will go a long way. If all else fails, I will call upon Jenn H's "connection". Yes, you read it correctly ... Jenn has a connection into the seedy underbelly of the air conditioning world ... I can't say anymore - it's all very hush-hush.

Anyway ... that's it for today ... I will post about the Lauren-Chip incident tomorrow ... still makes me laugh.

Air Conditioner Update

I cannot find someone to check my air conditioner! There are very few refrigeration techs that make house calls on window units ... only if you have central air. I really don't want to take out of the window ... that SOB is heavy ... I said it 50+ lbs ... it's actually 105 lbs. Heaaaavyy! as Lauren would say.

What to do, what to do? I can buy a new one, but if it's something simple to fix, I really don't want to get rid of my big one ... it's awesome. After reading Shelley's comment, I may ask the expert who lives just behind me for advice and maybe a lesson in air conditioning maintenance.

Air Conditioning

Over the last couple of years, I have started to become more environmentally concious. Slowly, but surely. But even though I do a lot of things to help the environment, there are still two things I adore that aren't quite so environment friendly - my truck and my air conditioning.

My truck ... well ... I love my SUV. I love being high up off the ground. I love knowing that if I get into an accident, I won't be the one with a crumpled hood or trunk ... for the first time (hazard of a small car, which I know well). I love the room and comfort in my truck. I love that it's six cylinders ... after years of driving a four. I even love the shape. I love that it has air conditioning! All of those things make it very unfriendly to the environment. My goal when it comes time to buy a new vehicle in oh say five years ... a hybrid SUV ... by that time the technology will be perfected. And the price will go down ... they're mucho dinero right now.

Air conditioning ... we went for a lot of years without it for the house. That is, until we got our dogs ... the summer heat was torture for them. So we got an air conditioner specially for the dogs ... I've become so spoiled that I can't go without it now. I love knowing that I can be outside in the +28 degree weather and know that my house inside is like a meat packing plant - very chilly! I love knowing that I just might have to curl up under a blanket to watch TV.

That brings me to my current condition - air conditioner-less. Well ... I have one, it's just not working well. It was hot yesterday, but very windy so you really didn't feel the heat. Today, not quite the same ... it was roasting! My house is like an oven. Poor Lauren looked like she had blush on her cheeks. So, I dragged my 50+ pound air conditioner upstairs and set it up in the dining room window. I turned it on and the fan comes on. And that's about it. I don't know why but it isn't actually cooling the air. My poor dog is panting away. At least it's cool outside now. He's taken up residence on the deck for the time being.

Needless to say, with the impending 29 degrees, I will be calling the repairman first thing in the morning.
